WHATS NEW ARCHIVE :
JANUARY 2012

31st Jan: I was reviewing my openings page and I found something missing...boards on the central cannon vs single horse defense. One of the oldest counters against the central cannon, the single horse defense was once thought to be inadequate against the central cannon (single horse defense diehard fans pls forgive me...). However, an increase in the use of the thundering defense against red's Angel's Pawn with left central cannon variation has breathed life into the single horse defense again. The board which i found on the internet was quite interesting and demonstrated the very basics of red attacking the center with the central cannon and black using the single horse defense. Enjoy! Click here ... Also added a few day's worth of ans to the daily puzzles page. I think a lot of people are watching from the sidelines, I hope that there will be more participation! Click here ...

25th July: Added a new annotated game. Click here  . Have fun!
24th July: Yesterday's entry should have been the 23rd...LOL. Anyway, have uploaded another three more boards on the basics of 1h1lp vs 1a2e endgames in the series of lectures by GM Liu Dianzhong. Many priniciples to follow. Still rusty after the break, hope to be able to increase efficiency and production to that of a few months ago...LOL. Have fun.
22nd July: Back still hurts. Boss went on holiday...had to do double shifts...sigh. Anyway, to those who missed me...(I am sure there are...) sorry for the delay. Will slowly work my way back to daily production as before. Uploaded the ans to all of the puzzle games that I had done before...Click here . There has been no Xiangqi for me for the past week. But I have been thinking, I think I will still gear my site to the the fundamentals.
14th July: Had a visit to an excolleague at my old hospital for some tests. All is well, but I think I need to take a 10 day break to recuperate. Will be uploading stuff again starting the 22th July. Will upload the ans to the puzzles over the next few days.
13th July: Finally managed to upload the ans to the extra mmlm puzzle presented to me by Mr Felix Tan of the AXF. Click here to go to the ans section and click on db 20120601 to see it. Also added the ans up till the 6th. And also added three more boards on 1h1p endgames by GM Liu. Click here ...

Stats show that there has been a decrease in the number of visitors to my site since the publication of the endgames...LOL. But I will continue uploading the endgames section as one must learn them well to really have a good fundamental beginning in Xiangqi. Learning Xiangqi Endgames = learning the fundamentals! Have fun!
7th July: Was only able to upload p02 of GM Liu's endgame lecture notes on pawn endgames.
6th July: A VERY busy day!!!!!! Was only able to add the ans up till the 2nd of July,  click here .... and also two more variations for the A64 opening. (click here ) . Also corrected the wrong link to the ans yesterday. Thanks to Richard for telling me that. Please, there is only one me doing this entire site, and I am bound to be make many mistakes. If you see any, please tell me!
5th July: It has been sometime since I did something for endgames. One of the reasons for that is that although it is one of the most important aspects of the game, finding the relevant boards and classifying them took too much time. So I decided to do something more efficient....I decided to base basic endgame theory on one book while adding bits and pieces here and there. The book I chose was authored by GM Liu Dianzhong which is for beginners and contains over 250 examples, discussing everything there is to basic endgame theory. I admit that I never did pay my dues for endgame theory, but I think it is high time that I did so and share it with you in the process. So, click here for the first page on endgame theory by GM Liu, or hover your cursor over the Endgame button in the menu and a submenu would appear. 250 boards, that would take a few months, interspersed with the other usual stuff....have fun!

WHAT'S NEW ARCHIVE :
November 2012

30th Nov: Last day of the month. Will end this hectic month with an annotated game with the cc7fh vs sch 2prc opening played back in 2007. I hope that after some theory, some actual examples would help you appreciate the game more...sort of like walking the walk after talking the talk. Unfortunately, the commentator of the game was unknown but the commentary was very nice.
29th Nov: Rainy wednesday here in Taiwan...and rain will continue for days to come. Growing mouldy and lazy. Anyway, have added the first page on a new major variation in the cc vs sch saga: red's right ranked chariot with 7th Filed Horse variation vs black's sch. Ans up till the 24th are also out. Click here ...
28th Nov: Crazy tuesday. I recall having uploaded a series of lectures on the double cross river variation of the screen horse defense earlier this year. Have uploaded the only board in GM Liu DianZhong's book on this opening today. Very exciting opening and I repeat, not one for the faint of heart. The reader is advised to go through the openings that that I have uploaded earlier and the links can be found in today's uploaded page itself, or simply go to the ECCO classification and search for C04.
27th Nov: Manic monday...Ans up till the 22nd are out. Click here ... And also added the second page to chapter 8 of 1r1c endgames. Must learn fundamentals.
26th Nov: Only had a little bit of time to add a new endgames page. And to my horror, I found out that I had labeled the endgames pages from the past 2 wks wrongly, and I have proceeded to re-do them and hyper-link them again... If you have been following the endgame lectures, we are now at Chapter 8...LOL. There are only about 70 pages left in the GM's book and we have covered over 150+ pages. Hang in there!!!
25th Nov: To put theory to actual practice, I have searched deep to find this C80 game that corresponds to the recent opening boards on the cc with left rbc vs sch opening that has been uploaded the past few days. Have Fun! Hah...finally sunday tomorrow....Ans up till the 18th of Nov of Oct are also out. Click here ...
24th Nov: Oops, have been too busy at work to have noted that I had made a few wrong links. Mr Robert Adams has informed me that I had made the wrong links to the Same Direction Cannons Series, which have been promptly corrected. Also added the final board to the Central Cannon with left riverbank cannon variation and also the final two boards to the sdc: fr vs rr.
23rd Nov: Check out the new page, the first in a few pages of the Central cannon with left riverbank cannon variation vs the screen horse defense. This is a very modern day opening which often played in competition nowadays.
22nd Nov: Been sometime since I added to the midgames section, which is the hardest to master. Click here for 4 midgames from the 11th Asian Xiangqi Singles Championships with analyses by female GM Zhang GuoFeng. Ans up till the 18th of Nov of Oct are also out. Click here ...
21st Nov: Busy ... Click here for 5 endgames on 1r1h1p endgames.
20th Nov: Ans up till the 16th of Nov of Oct are also out. Click here ...Also managed to add three very lengthy 1r1h vs 1r endgames... I hate busy Mondays... and PS Mr Elton Yuen and Mr Felix Tan have provided better answers to the db 20121113 poc 2 puzzle. I swear I will stop using the puzzles from that book/file...LOL.

17th Nov: Added the next page on 1r1h endgames by the GM. And I forgot to mention that Dr Rene Gralla was the author of that nice German report on Xiangqi yesterday. http://www.deutsch-chinesische-allgemeine.de/interessant-und-am%C3%BCsant/?logout=1
16th Nov: Found an interesting file over the net. It contained games played in 2008 Computer Olympiad . I do not know the validity of the games played, but they looked good. Unfortunately, there were no comments... Anyway, if anybody has more info about the event, please tell me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . And for German speaking Xiangqi players (yes, Georg...) , Dr Rene Gralla has most graciously shared information about Xiangqi in Germany: the recent 2012 German Xiangqi Championships. Please go to page 18 of the pdf (which can also be found in the downloads section) . Other reports can be found here (in German) and also here (in Chinese, the People's Daily ) . Dr Rene Gralla is very interested in Xiangqi. If you go to the WXF site, you can see many of his works, including the piece whereby he interviewed Professor David Li. Just go to the WXF website and search/type "Rene Gralla", and many of his works, including the MTV report on Xiangqi can be seen. My heartfelt thanks are to be given to Dr Gralla for sharing. It feels good that Xiangqi is everywhere! PS: Dear Georg, I expect you will tell me what that article is all about....LOL.
15th Nov: Ok I admit it, I got bored with the cc vs sch opening. So, instead of continuing, I have taken the liberty to add the sdc boards by GM Liu from the same board, in chapter 3. 11th Nov: gotta shake off some rust after a one week break. Still thinking of ways to add my Xiangqi manuals into my wife's milk for my son to drink... that should shorten his learning curve...Anyway, have added the next opening in the GM's series on the left riverbank horse variation. Click here ....
4th Nov: Sorry for the long delay. Have been in the hospital taking care of my wife and the birth of my son. Things would probably resume back to normal hopefully by the end of this week.Ans up till the 28th of Oct are out. Click here ...

WHAT'S NEW ARCHIVE :
December 2012

31st Dec: Last day of the year. Added a game played by GM Li LaiQun vs GM Hong Zhi in June this year. It is sort of a coming out of retirement match by GM Li LaiQun. And I have made several changes to the menu bar because it seems very slow on my mobile phone. Also spent quite a bit of time making additions for certain pages and deletions from others. This has been an eventful year for me and I am glad that my website is still around and going strong. Hopefully, more and more people will grow to learn and love the game of XiangQi as I do. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
30th Dec: Added the next page to yesterday's opening. And the ans up till the 26th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
29th Dec: Got bored with cc vs sch. Added a cc vs lt c blockade with odc variation page. Have fun! Mr Trevor Tao has also kindly pointed out a flaw in the db 20121223 mmlm puzzle! Yes it is flawed and black should win. LOL. Thanks!
28th Dec: Added the next wordy page on endgame theory by GM Liu DianZhong. And the ans up till the 24th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
27th Dec: Uploaded a match played in 2005 using the opening that I have uploaded the past two days. Master Li HongJia took on Master Jiang Chuan ( Jiang became GM only 2-3 years ago).
26th Dec: Added the next page, in continuation to yesterday's opening. And the ans up till the 22nd of Dec are also out. Click here ...
25th Dec: Added one page to a very fashionable opening and one that is very complex. It is often seen in competition nowadays: 57c3pa vs sch13pa rt rbh.
24th Dec: Merry X'mas! Added an annotated game found from the net. The game was played in 2004 in the General's Cup (which I was sooooooooo tempted to abbreviate as 'G Cup'...). Master Jing XueYi went up against Master Zhang ShenHong in this one, using the opening uploaded on the 20th. And the ans up till the 20th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
23rd Dec: Added more GM Zhang GuoFeng's midgames analyses. Click here. And Merry X'mas in case I forget!!!
22nd Dec: Well the end of the world just came and went... Added a page with two boards, the only two in the GM's book discussing the 58 Cannons vs Screen Horse Defense. And the ans up till the 18th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
21st Dec: Added the first page to chapter 9 of the endgames section. The GM shares his thoughts on how to play a better endgame. Also changed the ugly background color if you viewed the site from a mobile phone. Ans up till the 16th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
20th Dec: Added the next and final page in the cc prr without 7pa vs sch with 37pa variation. Click here. Was browsing my site from my mobile phone last night when I found that there were certain pages that were ok on the website but had problems on the mobile phone. Will call up the internet company that I use to try to solve that problem. If you find out any pages that have problems showing up on your mobile , please tell me which ones they are. There are over 1400 pages on my site now, and I cannot possibly go through each one of them on my mobile phone. --> Re did part of the starting of chapter 1 from the GM's book on openings. Had to re-do everything. Somehow things went berserk when they upgraded the site. Will continue to rectify things.
19th Dec: Ans up till the 14th of Dec are also out. Click here ... Also added the first page to a new important variation in GM Liu DianZhong's book on openings. Click here.
18th Dec: Took me a few hours, but I have managed to upload the 4th page on midgames anotated by GM Zhang GuoFeng which seems to be a hit, LOL. Ans up till the 12th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
17th Dec: A must see classic game way back in 1965. GM Hu Ronghua vs GM Wang JiaLiang. Spent the entire afternoon doing it. This one would go down in the history books.
16th Dec: Ans up till the 10th of Dec are also out. Click here ... Also added the final page containing endgames tabiat from the GM 's book. The final chapters and first chapter are basically on how to play the endgame. Very wordy. Will need time to do them.
15th Dec: Lazy...managed to add section 9 (only 2 boards) in the GM's book on openings for beginners.
14th Dec: Ans up till the 8th of Dec are also out. Click here ... There has been a decreased response to the puzzles on facebook. Any ideas why? Also added the next lengthy page to 1r1c endgames. Endgames are the basics and one of the best ways to learn Xiangqi efficiently. I notice that flow to my site decreases whenever endgames are uploaded, LOL, but it is a must. Guess I will have to upload more LOL.
13th Dec: Another busy day at work. Was only able to add one more page to the 1r1c endgames. Ans up till the 6th of Dec are also out. Click here ... Also found out that I had forgotten to add one more board to the  57c vs sch7pa 02 board uploaded 2 days ago. Somehow missed it... there should be three not two boards on that page.
12th Dec: Busy Tuesday!!! Added the next page in 1r1c endgames to the GM's book.
11th Dec: Page 2 on the 57c vs sch7pa 02 is out. I realized that I had made a minor mistake in yesterday's upload with the title of the boards uploaded and have promptly corrected them. In the boards uploaded yesterday and today, red does NOT play P7+1. Now back to Marvel Avengers...
10th Dec: Added first page to the next section on the 57c vs sch7pa, which is slightly different from the previous page uploaded two days ago. Ans up till the 4th of Dec are also out. Click here ...
9th Dec: Added a selected midgames page on three boards with comments and analysis by female  GM Zhang GuoFeng.
8th Dec: Added a new openings page on the 57 Cannons (traditional) vs the screen horse.
7th Dec: Lost badly in an internet game recently and so I did some research. Uploaded two games played with a similar opening. Click here for the first game and here for the second game. PS: Not related to today's upload, Greg, the one horned monster is a very very very vicious opening... LOL. Maybe I will check my library for more on the ohm and the 9tt..
6th Dec: Finally found time to continue on the screen horse opening. Click here ....
Ans up till the 2nd of Dec are also out. Click here ...
5th Dec: I had wanted to add on to the screen horse but decided against it anyway. Added 2 boards on the odc, the original big and small variation of it. Click here ....
4th Dec: Added only two boards on 1r1c1a sw 1a2e , very lengthy endgame but a very worthwhile one to learn as it demonstrates a very important tactic. Took me over 2 hours just to do these two boards... Ans up till the 30th are also out. Click here ...  And a million thanks must be given to some  of the visitors to this site who have told me that I had wrong titles for some of the content page...Been blurry.
