After introducing the first 4 boards on the Big Variation of the ODC, we see that Black has much to overcome and Red would either retain his lead or expand on it. It is a natural flaw. For professional Xq players, the Big Variation was not very popular and even now, it is very seldom seen.
The Small Variation of the ODC is completely different though. It is less volatile that the big variation and allows black to control his game better. There are also more chance of springing a counter on black.
In this board, the main discussion is on red using the Riverbank Cannon. It is interesting to see how Black reacts to this.
Again, it is never enough to encourage the newcomer or beginner to go through the Ancient manuals, in particular The Secret in the Tangerine and The Plum Flower Manuals to get a hang of this opening.
I have included two boards for your perusal to compare variations in case you get lost.
