After much consideration, I have decided to add this to my site. So far, there is quite some material on openings, but it is not systematic or cohesive enough. That is why I decided to base the introduction of fundamental opening principles on GM Liu Dianzhong's book, <<象棋新編教程 -- 象棋布局精要>> which is a very very good book, in my opinion, explaining the basics of opening theory.
Although the book is a little bit old (published in 2005), it fits the needs of my site perfectly: a short concise book with clear explanations on various openings, showing some history and evolution in suitable detail without overemphasis of less important material or less commonly played variations.
It is also one of the best introduction to openings that I have read thus far. Another good series of books which I have used on my site were written by the GM's disciple, Master Yan Wenqing together with Master Zhang Qiang of Beijing. Enough can be said of the quaility of the book.
This should be enough for the beginner and intermediate players alike. Learn the principles and the major orthodox variations well and you would not do too badly. In fact, with a little bit of creativity, you could even create your own opening.
And after finishing some of the boards, I now know why my opening sucks...LOL.
As mentioned in the earlier section on openings, there still has not been sufficient English literature on Xiangqi openings. Therefore, I will try my best to overcome it. And I will try to classify GM Liu's work with the ECCO system that this site is using, which is a terrible nightmare at the moment...
PS: Asterixes have been to some of the pages which represent the must see pages and also the must know variations.
