WHATS NEW ARCHIVE : MAY 2011

31st May 2011: Sheesh, I had forgotten to link game 12 yesterday. Anyway, I have corrected that mistake, and re written a portion of the webpage on The Secret in the Tangerine. Added another 3 games also, now there are only 5 left in vol 1...and another 30 in volume 2... Am thinking of adding a new, less thick ancient manual...perhaps the Invincible Xiangqi Manual 自出洞来无敌手 or one of the smaller ancient manuals. For any suggestions, please tell me.
30th May 2011: added game 12 of The secret in the Tangerine. About 30+ games left. Harder work than I had expected...
29th May 2011: Added over 20 games to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Volume 2 is now complete. 3 more volumes and about 370 left ...
28th May 2011: Been some time since I added games to the The Secret in the Tangerine. So I added games 09-11 from volume 1. Again, I repeat and stress, althought the opening moves are outdated, the kills presented are breathtaking!
27th May 2011: Uploaded 10 more games from the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. These few are relatively easy, even I could have solved them without too much difficulty. Have another few more crazy openings that I found on the net which I will upload over the next few days. Some are just too long... and crazy... for me to comment on.
26th May 2011: Finished all the turtle back cannons files I had, plus added a cross palace cannon openings summary. My online server was off last night or it should have been uploaded last night...sheesh. Have fun! Need some feedback from you guys. Have noticed that I have a steady following from New Zealand, any one of you guys care to give me an idea of the Xiangqi scene in New Zealand? Not much info on the net!
25th May 2011: The turtle back cannons are what their name implies, slowwwwww...might take a few more days. Added 5 more Elegant Pastime Manual games....Wonder if anyone is trying them. And for Spanish speakers, please go to Carlos's site, which is giving me competition than I had expected. Soon I would need to " borrow" stuff from his site. The url is https://sites.google.com/site/xiangqiesp/home . This is the url of another interesting article, http://www.cnngo.com/shanghai/life/chinese-chess-king-looks-apprentice-082469 . Makes you wonder...
24th May 2011: Added a new opening! The first of 4 of central cannon vs turtle back cannon. This is an unorthodox opening, but still occasionally seen in competition. You have to know it lest you can trapped. Also added 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Manual. Thanks for the encouragement to those who have sent emails. You asked for more openings, well, here is one!
23rd May 2011: Took me over 10h to subtitle over 300 variations of one of the most complex if not the most complex engame compositions (WXF also known as composed endgames), The Gathering of the Seven Stars! To be frank, I never got past the first few subvariations of the first variation... Thank the Good Lord for inventing the Xq viewers!
I have also included an article I recently found on the net. Please go to the News section to see the link. It is about GM Hu Ronghua looking for a child apprentice. Gave me much to think, please help me spread Xiangqi, I'd rather my child play Xiangqi then the online games or other fads that most youngsters are interested in now. Not that they are bad, just that I think Xiangqi is much more beneficial.

WHATS NEW ARCHIVE :
JUNE 2011

30th June 2011: Been hard at work on the site today. Redid 26-30 and added 306-310 to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. Added games 04-06 to the Secret in the Tangerine, also added a new Midgames tactic: the double threat. And finally touched up on some of the basic kills page with a few more additions of the games. Darn, at the rate I am going, I can author a few books on the subject... :)  Flow has been a little bit slow, give me some encouragement by telling others about my site. Thanks. PS: Singapore overtook France as the country who viewed my site most...
29th June 2011: Someone emailed me to ask me if there was a shorter route to winning with the 2P sw 2E endgame. I have studied his suggestion and republished the game. Nope, the original suggestions still stand. Redid games 16-25 of the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Added a new page of discover check to the Midgames section. I fear that I might have to do a lot of rearranging in the near future...Anyway, please tell me what you think of the midgames section, which by far, has been the hardest to write. Thanks!
28th June 2011: Many good things have happened today.
The new Xq viewer has been slightly modified to provide English for some of the export terms by Mr Peter Sung. Mr Felix Tan came to my rescue. He offered me his solution to game 301 by changing the position of the advisor. I have added the original board and Mr Felix's modifications and also games 302-305 to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. For those experts out there, please tell me if you have seen anything wrong with my reading of the game.
And as a final gift to the dedicated fans, I have added the craziest opening summary that I have ever seen on
Central Cannon vs Screen Horse.
For dedicated Xiangqi lovers, that should take you at least a year to memorize...hehehehehe, whilst I continue playing mahjong. Tell me what you think when you are done with it...
I have also added games 4 and 5 of vol 2 in The Secret of the Tangerine. Also, I forgot to tell you guys that I have added 5 more games to the 5 Rams Cup, 2nd tournament yesterday. A visitor asked me if I would publish the Plum Flower Manual, another super ancient manual. Yes!!! Of course!!! However, there are at least 3 different variations to it, I have actually done some of the games, but am still researching about the books. I might publish the Anti-Plum Flower Manual first because it is relatively shorter. And, I was looking at the stats today, to my surprise, the number one country where visitors came from was France. Please tell me who you are and what I can do to help improve my site!
27th June 2011: Redid the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual games 011-015. Was going to add five more new games to the same manual when I encountered trouble with game 301. Seems that red might not win after all... Added a new midgames tactic, Zugzwang. Also added a new basic kill, the hole in hole out checkmate technique. Still having a headache translating and finding decent terms for the various midgame tactics.
26th June 2011: Just returned from a 2 day vacation with a 700km drive... Redid games 006-010 of the Elegant Pastime Xq Manua, added the first 5 games to the 2nd ever 5 Rams Cup. Also special thanks to Mr Felix Tan for providing with an unusual an interesting endgame composition. Please check out the composed games site on the menu bar. The game that Mr Felix Tan has provided are exercises or puzzles for beginners, teaching the basics of using the pieces. Please help me proofread. I am still having a headache for the translations of the midgames tactics...
24th June 2011: Since the publishing of the video yesterday, I have decided to re-do the games that were not in the format of the "new" Xq viewer. Re-did games 001-005 and added 296-300. I think that the Xq viewer has some more functions that I had did not know exist. Will be tinkering with it. And will be taking a short 3 day vacation starting today. Will try to upload more games but I do not know if the hotel that I will be staying will have decent internet connection.  And please tell me what you think of the video and site. Mr Felix Tan has graciously donated more stuff which I will publish when I come back from vacation.
23rd June 2011: Ha, the internet connection came alive again! And good luck has been with me. A million thanks to Mr Chris Hankinson for doing a video on how to use my site and ccbridge. Please see it, it will help your game! I have pasted it on the home page!!! added the first 10 games of volume 4 of the elegant pastime xq manual + about 6-10 end games on the single horse today. Please tell me what you think of the video and how to use the site better!
22nd June 2011 4+pm: Damn , my internet connection broke down...am using the internet at an internet cafe...hope it will be ok by tonight... will upload asap when it is ok again.
21st June 2011 11am: Finally had the bugs fixed and now vol 3 is fully uploaded.
21st June 2011: Have finished all the games in vol 3 of the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. But I could only upload 273-278. Something is jammed somewhere. I will try to get the problem fixed tomorrow.
20th June 2011: Decided to kill the demons in the closet and get the midgames section started. It took me much longer than I had expected. Had to browse through over 10 manuals to try to get at least the framework started. I am still experiencing much difficulty finding decent English translations for the various tactics used. Please help me!!! If you have any better translation for the names of the tactics, tell me ASAP. I do not wish to do the same section a million times, like I might have to do the basic kills section another 1-2more times...sigh. Way behind in publishing the games. Tell me what you think, and all suggestions are welcomed.
19th June 2011: Added a new crazy openings summary. 57 cannons vs Screen horse defence. Unlike the turtle openings or the palcorner opening, this opening is very often used in actual competition. Also added a new page with 6 boards discussing the one cannon endgames. This has been a busy week...
18th June 2011: Added 15 more games to the Elegant Pastime Manual. There are some mistakes like in game 266 that I have corrected directly. Also, game 108 seems to be getting a following. Mr Ong Hock Seng of Singapore has sent it his modification of that game. Looks like a lot of us are in study mode...And I have found a few more mistakes in the earlier games that i have published in the same ancient manual. I will correct them in due time, so for those following the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual, there are many more games published. Volume 3 should be finished by next week...about 300 games...I have also prepared a few more endgames and actual games from the 2nd 5 Rams Cup. However, work has been busy this week, I hope to be able to find time to publish them hopefully over the weekend. And ps, a few more crazy openings have just been found...Finally, I re-did a portion of the basic kills. Added diagrams from the Elegant Pastime Xq manual for the sending the buddha home checkmate.
17th June 2011 : Added 5 more to the Elegant Pastime Manual. Added also game 3 of vol 2 of the Secret in the Tangerine. And game 108 is getting more feedback from other visitors from this site. I will publish these feedback soon after I make sure of some stuff. More feedback please!
16th June 2011: Must apologize for forgetting to link game 1 yesterday. Have added game 2 to vol 2 of The Secret in the Tangerine. Busy the next few days, but I will keep on adding slowly. The next few Elegant Pastime games are full of mistakes, might take some time.
15th June 2011: Have added game 1 of the second volume in The Secret of the Tangerine. And thanks to Mr Hock Seng for further improvements in game 246 of the Elegant Xq Manual. And Mr Felix Tan has offered us a modification on game 108 in the same manual. It is not easy, studying the games to the extent of modifying them, at least I do not have that abilities yet. Hats off to Mr Tan. Please visit that page to see his work. On a personal side, my boss is going on vacation, I will have my hands the next few days. Might only be able to publish a little bit less stuff. Sigh, I need a vacation myself....:)
14th June 2011: Have added 5 more the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual 249-253. Going to be a busy week for me this week. But I will make it a point to continue uploading. Special thanks must be given to Mr Peter Sung and Mr Lau Mong Yong for correcting my game 246.
13th June 2011: Have added 10 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Please help me proofread game 246. It took me quite some time... --> Thanks to Mr Peter Sung for giving me the correct answer... whew...
12th June 2011: Added 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xq manual games 234-238. I have actually prepared quite a few more endgames, but am still contemplating on how to present them. And I give up trying to translate the names of the tactics used in Chinese into English...I have sought help from a few masters in Chess to find more appropriate names. The mid-games section now is a pain in the ass... And thanks to Charee for allowing me to publish his testimonial on my site.
11th June 2011: For the more advanced players, I have added a new openings summary: the palcorner cannon 士角炮. Also added 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual (229-233). Still cracking my head on the midgames section but I think a breakthrough is due soon.
10th June 2011: 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual (224-228), restructured and added a few more endgames to the endgames section. Am cracking my head thinking up of English translations to the various tactics used. For example, does anybody have a decent translation for 腾挪? Or would any kind soul please direct me to the English names of chess tactics? My midgames section page is still barren...sigh.
9th June 2011: 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual (219-223), about 330 left. Also, finally finished volume 1 of The Secret in the Tangerine! And thanks to a fan from Thailand for pointing out a link mistake in the one pawn endgames section. In appreciation, and partly because of a mild bout of insomnia, I added a page with 5 endgames on the 3 pawn endgames. Please help me proofread!
8th June 2011: 3 more new games to the Secret in the Tangerine! Volume one of this masterpiece will be finished soon!
7th June 2011: Did not have any dumplings although it was the dumpling festival in remembrance of the great poet Qu Yuan. Anyway, it was a public holiday here. Added another 15 games to the Elegant Pastime Manual. Am experimenting with something new with the viewer at my website also. A few of you asked about certain rules of the AXF, I checked with the authorities and I hope my answers satisfy. Keep em coming...
6th June 2011: added game 16 to The Secret inside the Tangerine. Today is the dumpling festival. Peace...
5th June 2011: Added 5 more games to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Added all the 6 games played in the 1st ever 5 Rams Cup tournament back in 1981. Added it to the legend on the left , just hover your mouse over "Selected Games" and a submenu will appear. You may either click selected games or the  5 rams cups games directly. Intend to slowly add on the games as I find the site too lack of actual games played. Still struggling with the midgame section and trying of a way to organize things. And thanks for the encouragement and emails...keep them coming. I will answer all of them asap! Also corrected a few mistakes which I found.
4th June 2011: Finished all the games listed in The Invincible Xiangqi Manual. Still thinking of how to  publish the daily puzzle. Need feedback. And I hope Mr OH Tan's family gets healed from flu soon. For those new to the site, please visit the acknowledgement's section to see who Mr OH Tan is...

3rd June 2011: Working on more translations of various terms to English. No new games today. Someone emailed me asking for simpler puzzles, for beginners, what do you think? Please give me feedback! Actually I have been thinking of doing a daily puzzle column...
2nd June 2011: Added a few more chapters to the Invincible Xiangqi Manual.More than half completed of that tiny manual. Also started to add games to Volume 3 of the Elegant Xiangqi Pastime Manual.
1st June 2011: Yes, a new ancient manual. the Invincible Xiangqi Manual 自出洞来无敌手 which probably existed earlier than the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. I have finished 1/7 of it. My testimonials page is a little bit stale and short, please send me some encouragment.

JULY 2011

31st July 2011: Chris to the rescue again. Have been touching up and adding stuff to the basics section, redoing and correcting some , and Chris has finsihed approximately another 30 games to the Elegant Xiangqi Pastime Manual. Wow! Incredible for one with a minimal grasp of the Chinese language! Have also published the answers to the daily puzzles up till 7/27. Need more responses!
30th July 2011: added a new basic kill and touched up on a few other basic kills. Having fun with the puzzles, but still too few responses. Spread the word!
29th July 2011: Added volume 3 to the Plum Flower manual. Have also finished the webpages on the daily puzzles and their answers. There is a little bit of confusion to the boards from the period of 2011/07/23-2011/07/26... have made too many boards...Will publish them when I get more answers for my efforts! Grin. --> oops forgot to publish the site again. Sorry. Ok now!
28th July 2011: whoops, forgot to post the entire volume 2 of the Plum Flower Manual by Wang. Was busy adding a super summary of games 1 to 5.
27th July 2011: Added 3 more games to vol 2 of the Plum Flower Manual by Wang. This section is devoted to the cross place cannon vs left central cannons. Added a new endgame page 1r vs 2c. And have published the answers to the puzzles on 7/22-23. Need more likes on my facebook fanpage. Let us see if I can pass the 100 mark by next week!
26th July 2011: Holy cow! A million thanks to Mr Chris Hankinson who single handedly finished volume 5 of the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. WOW!!! I have also finished volume 1 of the Plum Flower Manual by Wang. Please go see it! If I have the time, I will publish the answers to the puzzles the past few days.
25th July 2011: Did the next 3 days worth of fanpage puzzles...sheesh. No new additions today! Sunday, give me a break! --> Insomnia. So i added game 5 to the Plum Flower Manual.
24th July 2011: Added two more game to the Plum Flower Manual by Wang. Lots and lots of variations... sheesh. and the answers are out.
23rd July 2011: Added a few new endgames, made some modifications to the site. Have finished the answers to the puzzles the past few days. But since response is slow, might paste them later... Need more response!!! Will be adding a few more "new" ancient manuals over the next few days. Still thinking of ways to do the midgames section...sigh, big pain in the ass.
22nd July 2011: Added 15 new Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual boards, all done by Chris. I redid the introduction to notations page after someone had written in to say that there were a few mistakes. Thanks! I do the site mostly after midnight, and there are mistakes here and there, so please tell me and I will correct them ASAP! Thanks again. Momentum is slow with the fanpage on Facebook. Spread the word! And at least give a click on "Like"!
21st July 2011: Started on a new ancient manual, The Plum Flower Manual by Wang. This is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time and it has influenced the thinking of the openings for centuries. Added a few endgames too. Pasted the answers to recent boards.
20th July 2011: Finally the openings section in the secret in the tangerine is finished....whew....4mths....time to go to bed

18th July 2011: added one more new game to the best games ever. Made a few corrections here and there. the next week will be a busy week.
17th July 2011: Hey people, have been a hardworker today. Have uploaded the entire volume 3 of The Secret in the Tangerine, aka 橘中密. Also added a few new endgames to the single chariot opening. And today's best addition is the BEST GAME of 1983, between GM Lv Qin 呂欽 and Zheng Huotian 鄭火添. There are only 6 such selected games in history, took me >1h to do ,but it worth the effort. Please click on the Selected games button in the menu bar to see it.
16th July 2011: A million thanks to Chris again for the addition of so many Elegant Pastime games! If the chinese characters do not show, that is because I use traditional chinese in Taiwan, whilst the files are mostly in simplified chinese. That problem has been bugging me since the beginning of this site. My fanpage is slowly growing, please help me spread the word. I have added several games to vol 3 of the Secret in the Tangerine, thanks to Chris who has freed me from the Elegant Pastime Games. I think, I might be able to finsh both manuals but the end of this month or next month latest. Also added a few more videos from Jimmy Chong. Most are ok, but there are still a few urls with problems, whom I have asked my computer programmer to fix. Deadbeat...Oh, and the answers to some of the puzzles are ok too...
15th July 2011: tiring day...too tired . will add new stuff tomorrow.
14th July 2011: Great day!!! I have obtained permission from Jimmy Chong from Hong Kong to upload his ENGLISH SUBTITLED videos on Xiangqi to my site! I will slowly add them over the next few days. Please go to Youtube, search for hk92jimmy and give him a thumbs up!!! great stuff. And a million thanks need to be showered upon Chris Hankinson who has offered to help me to do the games in the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. I have so many more games uploaded, that I have lost count. And the discussion about my daily puzzles has been heating up, so, join in the fun! Pls click on the link below! Have fun!
13th July 2011: sheesh , i had done quite a few games but the wysiwyg site that i use broke down, tried over an hour to upload them...sheesh, hope i have better luck tomorrow. and i finally managed toget a facebook fanpage email.
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/xqinenglishcom/223543007685915?sk=wall , please go there to see the daily puzzles. have added the answers to the menu bar , but it looks ugly , with the site down, i will do it tomorrow. 4.30am. time to sleep...sheesh... --> and it came alive at 5am. too tired to do anything abou it...
12th July 2011: Was very busy with some of the facebook stuff, only managed to add 5games to the Elegant Pastime Manual. Redid the Xie Xiaxun biography, added some photos too and corrected a few mistakes mentioned by Chris Hankinson. Thanks Chris! Please help me and go to facebook, search for xqinenglish.com and click like. Need to get more likes to get a personal url. And spread the word! Thanks! And before I forget, a million thanks must be given to Chris for his decoration and redoing of the new banner!
11th July 2011: Finally got the facebook fanpage ok with some help from a malaysian friend! I have mentioned in the past that I will add a daily puzzle as requested by some of the visitors to my site. Please go to facebook, search for xqinenglish.com and you will find it. And please click on "Like" to support it. I will try to add a daily puzzle or at least one every 2-3days, and give the answers the following day. I have also added 4 new pages to the one chariot endgames section, which encompasses the very basic and importan principles of this sort of endgames. And if anybody has any information regarding Super Xiangqi Great Xie Xiaxun, please email me the stuff you have. An International Chess Magazine is very interested in doing a report on one of the greatest in Chinese chess. Please see the biography of him in my site under Xiangqi greats --> Xie Xiaxun to understand why.  They also sent me a great testimonial, to encourage me. Looks like Xiangqi is spreading!
10th July 2011: Sheesh, I give up on the facebook fanpage thing...for today. Anyway, I have added an entire new ancient manual, (a very short one though) to the site. Please click on the Plum Flower Manuals on the submenu bar to see it. It is quite a practical manual, this <<无双品梅花谱>> or The Plum Flower Manual , “Unique” version. Took me quite a bit of time to research and summarize the Plum Flower Manual series... Proofreading is needed! Thanks in advance! And I received an email from an interim editor for a chess magazine, requesting help for research into super Xiangqi great, Master Xie Xiaxun. If anyone has more information, please help out. Thanks.
9th July 2011: Finished adding all the games to the 2nd Five Rams Cup. Please go to the selected games section to view it. Have prepared many more games, but am having my hands full with trying to create a fan page on facebook.
8th July 2011: Added 346-350 to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. And Volume 2 of the Secret in the Tangerine is  finished. Have added the last 3 games to that volume. Still cleaning up the basic kills section and the midgames section 2. Am thinking of taking a short break from these 3 sections, might consider doing something that I have long wanted to do for the site: translating the chinese videos found on youtube. What do you think? And I hope to add more games to the selected games section as well as a few more biographies. Well, I shall see what I can do this weekend.
7th July 2011: Added 336-345 to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. Added a new basic kills page on 车马冷着杀法 or the chariot horse checkmate. Also added a few basic kills here and there. Like the midgames section, the names of the basic kills are quite messy. Cleaning them up as best as I can. And I think I have the backbone of the midgames tactics about ok soon.
6th July 2011:Added games 9 and 10 to the Secret in the Tangerine and also a new page on the one cannon endgames. Please enjoy! Flow has been slow as of late, if you like my site, please help me promote it on facebook. Had thought of adding a fanpage to face book, but I am not sure as how to do it. If anybody knows, please tell me.
5th July 2011: Added 5 more games 331-335 to The Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Also finally managed to get game 8 of vol 2 of The Secret Inside the Tangerine done.
4th July 2011: Re-did 031-040 of the The Elegant Pastime Xq Manual and turned it into the new viewer format. Added 326-330. Nearly finished with game 08 of the Secret in the Tangerine. Still thinking of ways to present the midgames section on tactics better.
3rd July 2011: Games 316-325 have been added to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual. Somehow the past few games have been murder...whew, took up nearly triple the time I needed to do a game usually. Halfway through adding a new game to The Secret in the Tangerine. But I guess I would want to sleep now...
2nd July 2011: Been bogged down with unexpected work. Only added games 311-315 to the Elegant Pastime Xq Manual.
1st July 2011: Been about 3 full months since I started the site online. It has grown slowly but steadily. Thanks for the support. Have added page 2 to the 3 pawn endgames today, game 07 of The Secret in the Tangerine and a special surprise. Please go to the selected games page and click on the selected games provided by Mr Felix Tan. I welcome any more such additions to my site. This is the best way to learn!

WHATS NEW ARCHIVE :
AUGUST 2011

31st August 2011: Added all 16 games, without commentary, of the 5th 5 Rams Cup. There was a slight mistake in numbering the boards ,but it should not affect your viewing pleasure.
30th August 2011: Darn, found quite a few mistakes and am still correcting them... added only 10 games to the EBSXq Manual (Extremly Brilliant and Superb Xianqi Manual) ...sheesh. The server seems to have caused some trouble when it broke down a few days ago. Please tell me if you find any mistakes!!!
29th August 2011: ans up till 8/24 are out. arranged and posted a few interesting endgame compositions in the endgame composition pages. Oops, forgot to mention that i have added several new combination kills to the basic kills section. These are the basics of xiangqi, much more important than opening theory !
28th August 2011: added 10 more games to the extreme manual. tiring day.
27th August 2011: The server broke down again last night. I had to wait until just now to upload the ENTIRE Anti-Plum Flower Manual. First of its kind in the world!
26th August 2011: Had wanted to add two more games to the Anti-Plum Flower Manual, but game 3 took me over 5 hours, and I still have yet to finish it...so today's single addition is game 2...
25th August 2011: added a few more games to the Extreme Manual and a new section on basic kills via the combination approach.
24th August 2011: added 15 more games to the Extreme manual. Published the answers to some of the earlier puzzles. Halfway through game 1 of the anti-plum flower manual. harder than I thought...
23rd August 2011: Added a new page to the basic kills, and added over 10 games to the Extreme manual (the "newest" ancient manual on the site.) Going to start work on the Anti-Plum Flower Manual over the next few days. Will juggle between doing the two manuals while trying to adde more endgames and complete games.
22nd August 2011: took me over 2 hours just to annotate and upload just 2 games of the best of the best selected games in history. one more board left to go! added many new boards to the basic kill, strategy too....
21st August 2011: Finished uploading all the games in the 3rd 5 Rams Cup in 1983. The 5 Rams Cup is essentially the tournament of champions and in my opinion, the toughest tournament in the world...too bad it does not exist now.
20th August 2011: Finished uploading all the games in the last 5 Rams Cup ever held in 2009. Published some of the answers to the daily boards about a week ago.
19th August 2011: It has been some time since I posted tournament games. There have been people requesting for more recent tournament games, so I added the first 10 games of the 29th 5 Rams Cup. Will try to upload more of the recent tournament games. Will NOT comment as they are way too deep for me...will only add comments should I find them. Someone has also requested for the Anti-Plum Flower manual. That is already on my to-do list. The entire manual should be ready over the next few weeks. Give me some time as there is only one me only...
18th August 2011: added 5 more games to the Extreme Manual and added at least 3-4 (lost count)more midgames pages. I will slowly add on whenever I find good examples.
17th August 2011: added 15 more games to the Extreme Manual. Added a single new page on the midgames section. Server broke down yesterday, only able to add them today.
16th August 2011: Added a new Xiangqi ancient manual. The kills there are said to be comparable to the Elegant Xiangqi Manual and to my knowledge, it is the first of its kind on the net.极巧穷极 is the name of the manual. Very hard to translate so forgive my "funny" translation! Enjoy!
15th August 2011: added 3 more new basic kills, am in the process of doing another ancient manual, added more stuff to the midgames which i will publish a little bit later. but today's biggest catch is that I have managed to get into contact with 东方剑客, whose super openings boards you have enjoyed. He seems willing to help me...let us hope for the best!!!
14th August 2011: Have done another 2 more games from the Plum Flower Manual. It will be uploaded tomorrow! Redid the page introducing the Secret in the Tangerine. Robert from the US sent me an email asking me to clarify a few foggy points in that page. Thanks! I do most of the work on the site way past midnight, and mistakes are bound to occur. Please help me proofread. Thanks again. --> insomnia...so I have uploaded Wu's Plum Flower Manual for your perusal.
13th August 2011: Have done 2 new games in a NEW Plum Flower Manual, the version by Wu from the Qing dynasty. There are only 5 boards to this volume. Should be uploaded 2-3days later. Still touching up on the midgames section. Too tired to continue...There will be many new additions by Sunday!
12th August 2011: added one more midgames pages. I think I have the format that I want in mind slowly laid down. Should be getting faster. The midgame's page is a mess now, so bear with me, and if any of you has better terms, please tell me asap! Do not want to do the same section over and over and over again!
11th August 2011: added some more midgames pages and touched up on a few basic kills.
10th August 2011: added and modified the format of the midgames section. After I am finished with this section, in about 2-3wks or so, I will concentrate on selected games and more ancient manuals.
9th August 2011: added a new midgame tactic, the pin. I will start with the simple ones for the beginners to learn and slowly add on. Also published the ans to some of the puzzles earlier this month. tell me what you think! hard work...

8th August 2011: Finally after a few months of hard work, perhaps the 3 most important ancient manuals, The Elegant Pastime Xq Manual, The Secret in the Tangerine (openings section) and The Plum Flower Manual by Wang has been fully uploaded. I realize that there are typing errors here and there and I will correct them in due time. Will touch up on them too to make them better, slowly..........
7th August 2011: Added 2 more games to volume 6 of the plum flower manual. sunday, lazy day...
6th August 2011: Finished doing the entire volume 5 of the Plum Flower Manual. One more volume to go! Touched up and added more pages to the basic kills section. There has been much discussion on the puzzles today. good sign!
5th August 2011: Redid a few more pages of the basic kills section. Sheesh, it looked terrible...finished uploading the entire volume 4 of the plum flower manual by wang, and added a summary of volume 4. and have started REALLY doing the midgames tactics portion. I predict that it should be ok in about 2 wks time.
4th August 2011: added two more boards to vol 4 of the plum flower manual, a few more endgames, and a few more boards to the various basic kills.
3rd August 2011: Added the answers to the puzzles before august. having a headache doing some of the endgames...and the ancient manuals.
2nd August 2011: Added a few more endgames and games 1 and 2 to volume 4 of Wang's Plum Flower Manual. Great kills!
1st August 2011: Chris has done it again! There are 6 volumes to the Elegant Pastime Xiangqi Manual. I spent over 3 months doing the first 4, and he did the last 2 in 2 weeks, tops...sheesh! Anyway, a trillion thanks to Chris again, allowing me to spend more time doing the daily puzzles and to add on to other ancient manuals. If more people like Chris help out, I think I will be able to upload all the ancient manuals there are within the span of one year! Anyway, all 550 endgame compositions are fully uploaded, the first of its kind in the world, to my knowledge that is. At least in English...but I have not seen a Chinese site yet. As the opening games in the same manual are similar or identical to The Secret in the Tangerine, I will upload them at a much later date. Right now, I would like share as many ancient manuals as possible. Am still stuck with the midgames section, but I think I have found a solution. Adding bits and pieces here and there and everywhere! Enjoy! A million thanks to Chris again!

Click here... there are basically two more variations to this big 4 endgame puzzle but my Xq viewer had been giving me hell... I think it is because of the traditional chinese interface that I am using. Anyway, also added games 51-60 to the Extreme Manual which should be finished soon. have already started on working on another ancient manual but I would want to spend more time on contemporary works. If you have any suggestions or even requests, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. I am not a historian and only have a layman's knowledge of Chinese history (mostly accumulated from Kungfu comic books...LOL) but it is an interesting game. Please go check it... WHATS NEW ARCHIVE :
NOVEMBER 2011

30th Nov 2011: Have redone, touched up, and added on a new page on the presentation of ECCO. Please go to the Openings Section or click here ...
29th Nov 2011: Added page 2 to the 1c1p endgame combination.  Still doing the dreaded ECCO translation.
28th Nov 2011: Added another opening board, cc with 3pa and left pawn ranked cannon (prc) vs Lt 3 step tiger. click here ... or go to the openings page to see it. Still struggling with the ECCO translations but I believe after I have finished, the breath of the openings in Xiangqi will be more accessible.
27th Nov 2011: Added a new opening, the Elephant with screen horse variation vs left central cannon, an age old opening. Click here ... And I am still busting my head doing the ECCO translation.... Managed to add the translations to the "A" group of ECCO openings. Please go to the openings section to see it.
26th Nov 2011: Added the first page of a few pages explaining the ECCO system of classifying the openings. ECCO = Encyclopedia of Chinese Chess Openings. The only system I have found and perhaps the most used system in China today. Click here... Was halfway through translating the Axx openings when the xqbase.com seemed to out for renewal.
25th Nov 2011: Added another 5 games to the Plum Flower Springs Manual. Translating the names of the openings is HARD WORK! I'd rather do more boards instead.
24th Nov 2011: Published 6 days worth of answers to the daily puzzles section. Go see how you fare! Still redoing bits of the openings section...--> Finally finished redoing the whole openings section. Added a new opening, Cross palace cannon vs left central cannon. And thanks to George from Germany for his comments on the ECCO system. I will try to translate that whe I have the free time.
23rd Nov 2011 : Took me much longer than expected , but I have finally managed to do page 1 of the 1c1p endgames (vs 1e).  It looks simple, but it is not. Shows the kungfu needed to master endgames in Xiangqi. Have fun. Will  continue doing more endgames and openings and maybe upload a few more ancient manuals boards of the Plum Flower Springs Manual, over the next few days.
22nd Nov 2011 : Finished uploading all the endgames that I have arranged on 1h1p. Have fun...Am about 80% done with redoing the openings section. Much more systematic...
21st Nov 2011:Added approximately half of the endgames I could find on 1h1p (both bp and hp). Please go to the endgames section to see it.
20th Nov 2011: Added the ans to the daily puzzles up till 11/16. Redoing and adding to the endgames site.
19th Nov 2011: Bloody hell. Online server came alive at 3am... I have uploaded so much stuff that it jammed. Added games 11-15 to the Plum Flower Springs Manual. Click here ... or simply go to the menu bar and click on it. Please have a look at game 13, it is a rare discussion of an unorthodox black opening. Have redone many of the openings and endgames pages. Some are yet to be published...sigh. Time to go to bed.
18th Nov 2011: Finally finished the 2R endgames, for now. Will start on other sections of the endgames and openings and of course the ancient manual over the next few days.
17th Nov 2011: uploaded 5 more games to the Plum Flower Springs Manual. Still doing more endgames, it is the classification that is killing me.
16th Nov 2011: Will be busy adding and redoing most of the openings and the endgames section, so I have added a new ancient manual, The Plum Flower Springs Manual. Quite a big manual...with 50 games and over 200 hundred variations. I have no time to annotate them but I have decided to slowly upload them while I continue with work on the endgames and openings. The first 5 games of volume 1 are uploaded. Please go to the menu bar and float the cursor over the ancient manual bar and it should appear. Took over an hour to get it added to the menu bar. Have fun...
15th Nov 2011: Whew... Redid most of the screen horse opening. I think I have finally settled for a decent format for presenting the openings. Things should speed up...after I redo the other bits. Please tell me what you think. Added many introductions to the major variations of cc vs sch. Please go to the openings section , under the central cannon vs screen horse opening section.
14th Nov 2011: Ans up till 11/10 are out. Response has been decreasing again...must be because of the weekend. LOL. Thanks to Michael Yuen for pointing out a few mistakes in the basics section. I need more proofreading! Am in the process of reclassifying all the openings and correcting the typing mistakes. This should take me some time.
13th Nov 2011: Redid all the games in the 2h endgames series. Also rearranged much stuff in the endgames page. Added the second and final part, for now, the 59 cannon vs screen horse with edge cannon for chariot exchange opening. Click here. Whew...
12th Nov 2011: Added page 2 and 3 to the 2r endgames. The boards were not too difficult but the classification was messy...sigh. looks like I will have a busy weekend! Please go to the endgames section!
11th Nov 2011: Started on doing 2r endgames. There were much more than I had expected and getting them classified into the format that I want took me much longer than expected. Was only able to finish one page. Click here... I expect that the 2r endgames would take a few more days.
10th Nov 2011: Took me much much longer than expected, but it is ready, a new opening and one very complex and very commonly played in competition : 59 cannons with 7pa and pawn ranked chariot vs Screen Horse defence with 7pa and edge cannon for chariot exchange variation. Click here... also been redoing much of the endgames page.
9th Nov 2011: Added a new opening discussion: Same direction cannon: slow chariot vs filed chariot. Click here... This is a relatively new opening. Also added the answers to the puzzles a few days ago. The answers to the extra puzzles can be found in the endgames section. I am still adding and reorganizing the endgames section into a more palatable format and I keep finding new games to add...sheesh. Busy day! I need some feedback . Please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Also added Georg's comments about my site. Need more encouragement! LOL.
8th Nov 2011: As promised, I have finished many 2c endgames and published them. Please click on the endgames menu button on the left to find them. Seldom does an endgame end whereby you have 2 cannons left, but knowing this combination, how they attack, defend, trap, block...is essential to improving your skills in Xiangqi, especially so for the International chess player who may be a relative stranger to the cannon.
7th Nov 2011: Have published the last few games of the Gems Manual. Click here... I will be concentrating on the endgames and openings for the next few weeks. Halfway through doing the boards for 2 Cannon endgames, over 20 odd of them. And then I will have to upload them and design the web page. Should be ready in a few days time!
6th Nov 2011: Have started redoing and adding to the endgames section. I hope to be able to provide the first online dictionary of basic endgames over the next few months. The first correction that I have done is the the 3 Pawn Endgames Section. Please go to the endgames section there to see it.
5th Nov 2011: Added the second and final part (for now) to the Central Cannon with ranked chariots variation vs Sandwiched Horse Defense. Click here for the first page published a few days ago, and here for the 2nd page...
4th Nov 2011: Added another 10 more games to the Gems Manual. Click here ...
3rd Nov 2011: Added another 10 more games to the Gems Manual. Click here ...
2nd Nov 2011 : Added another 10 more games to the Gems manual. Click here... Soon to be finished! And in view of the recent surge in participation of the fb fanpage, and quite a few of the stronger players have been throwing in the white towel...I have published the ans up till the 2nd of Nov. Please go to the menu bar on the left and click on ans to daily puzzles....The answer to db 20111031 poc 2 is flawed. My apologies. This puzzle was from one of the ancient manuals but somehow it did not take into consideration one of the variations suggested by Choy. My apologies.
1st Nov 2011: Added a new opening, Central cannon with ranked chariot and central pawn advancement vs Sandwiched horse defense. This is one of the older openings, still sometimes seen in actual competition, although black is able to handle red's fierce attack.

PS:  http://www.xiangqi.de/xqinenglish_sitemap.html  is the url of a New Year Day's present from Georg of Germany. It is a very nice site map of my site and I could not have done better. I had wanted to do one but after adding more content. Content over cover is what I hope to achieve, but I thank Georg Jeiter from the bottom of my heart. May 2012 be the year Xiangqi gets more recognition in the West or non-Chinese countries. And the following url is a very very interesting video from you tube. Please watch it... http://youtu.be/6bfHqHuXryQ . Very interesting. I thank Chris Hankinson for the url.

23rd Dec: Thanks for the support. Quite a few have told me that the CCbridge manual was very helpful. Please give thanks to Georg Jeiter of Germany. My contributions were meager compared to his work. Mr Peter Sung has also kindly agreed to publish it on the WXF website so that more people can make use of it. Have added another few more games to the 19th 5 Rams Cup. Looks like I will have trouble finishing the endgames database by the end of this year... sigh. Will see what I can do about it over Christmas.
22nd Dec: A few people have emailed me about having problems downloading the ccbridge manual. I checked and the file I had was corrupted so I have uploaded the one that is ok. Stay tuned for more updates. And I have added more games to the 19th 5 Rams Cup. Click here ...

16th Dec: Ran a fever but alas ok. Only had energy to upload a few games of the 18th 5 Rams Cup. click here...
15th Dec: Hit with the flu...sigh. Had to search deep into my library for just 2 boards, on 1c1p vs 1r. The chariot would win hands down most of the time, but these two boards show many great attacking techniques that allow th 1c1p to win. Click here ...
14th Dec: Busy day. Only had time to add a new page to the 1c1p endgames section. Click here...

12th Dec 2011 part 2: Suddenly remembered that I have not posted the answers to the daily puzzles in some time. Have uploaded the answers up till 2011-12-08. And I had a looked at the stats just now. I saw that I suddenly had over 10000 hits yesterday, about 90 % from Thailand. I guess some Thai fan is fanatic about my humble site...LOL. I also found out a few days ago that the Russian Xiangqi Federation has used some of my material. I thank the support given , but please add a link or acknowledge my site. Thanks again.
12th Dec 2011: My Sunday is burnt again. Finally decided to upload the incomplete collection of games from the 16th 5 Rams Cup held in December 2011. For some unknown reason, the games that I could find on the net for this tournament were incomplete with many spoilt files. If anyone has the complete collection, please email me. I give up... Have wrote to the authorities about a few mistakes that i had found too and they have it corrected. Now, please help me proof read my version! LOL. Back to the Boards... Also added all the answers up till November. Been to busy and forgot to publish the ans. But response has been poor today. And a million thanks to Georg Jeiter who is helping me proofread my ECCO. Finally , (whew, I have done much today have I not?) , i found a pdf version of the newest Xiangqi rules in China, (not quite the same as the AXF/WXF rules which I advise visitors to my site to adhere to) , and have uploaded it. ( under the Others section
