GM Hu Ronghua's Sandwiched Horse Defense Treatise Introduction
Grandmaster Hu Ronghua's Sandwiched Horse Defense Treatise is one of the classics on Xiangqi that MUST BE read. Although it was not a thick book, the way that the Grandmaster presented the material is very beneficial to anyone trying to learn the Opening Phase in Xiangqi.
The Sandwiched Horse Defense was made a viable counter to the Central Cannon almost single-handedly by the Grandmaster. Today, it is the second most played counter against the Central Cannon in tournaments around the world, after the Screen Horse Defense. At the peak of his career, the Grandmaster wrote a short book on the topic back in the 1980s. It was a truly remarkable book where he shared his insights into the opening system with all.
There were twelve chapters in the book. The first eleven chapters discussed the various major variations of the Central Cannon vs. Sandwiched Horse Defense System. In contrast, the last chapter contained thirteen games that were played and commented by the Grandmaster himself. There were two editions to the book in the Webmaster's recollection. He lost his copy of the book three decades ago and still laments that loss to this day. Luckily, the Webmaster's lifelong frenemy and arch-enemy on the board, Mr. OH Tan, gifted his collection, which contained the Grandmaster's signature! This edition of the treatise was published by a joint effort back in the 1980s. The Webmaster has obtained the permission of the AXF Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kwan How, to translate the book into English and share it with the West. The Webmaster has also uploaded a series of videos according to the different chapters. These videos have been uploaded to Youtube.
