The King in the endgame is a powerful force as it can exert its influence by using the Royal Rule. Because the kings cannot face each other in the same file without any intermediate piece, the King is granted a chariot-like presence on the board. Since there are only three files in the palace, the Royal Rule would grant a king control of the file that it was on in the endgame and prevent the enemy king from moving to the same file.
