Okay, before we continue, it is the right central cannon with right proper horse variation for red and right central elephant variation for black. I do not know why, but this was given an ECCO of E32 which changes all the directions of the red cannon and horse and also the black horse and elephant. I think it is because ECCO treats P3+1 as the first move, so everything would be a mirror image. This might need a little bit of getting use to for the newcomer...
The Angel's Pawn P7+1 or P3+1 is one of the major Red openings in Xiangqi. I think it is second place to the Central Cannon in terms of the number of times used. The characteristics of this opening are that it is very flexible. Red does not limit himself to a opening formation very early in the game. He tests black, and would counter black's opening as best as possible. The Angel's pawn can metamorphosize into the central cannon, screen horse, sandwiched horse, elephant etc...opening.
Black has many counters to red's P7+1 are many; amongst them the thundering defense, which has been used extensively and proven over the centuries, and especially so in the last 30-40 years. It has been proven over and over again to be a good counter.
The thundering defence is very direct, since P7+1 was played by red, black uses this move to add pressure to that pawn and the elephant behind it. This opening can also metamorphosize into the same direction cannons, the single horse defence etc. It is unable to change into the screen horse defense or sandwiched horse defence though.
The moves give represent the generally "orthodox" moves that have been proven over time in many competitions. However, I do advise the reader to form his conclusions about the various formations as there is no sure-win opening variation in Xiangqi, and different formations may be treated the differently by different people.
I do not expect that anyone will be a master of this opening after going through the boards but at least , do not make the basic mistakes or go against the principles of this opening.
I have based this board primarily on Master 阎文清 and Master 张强's work after briefly checking it against different manuals by different authors.
Today's board is one of the older variations of this red vs black opening. Enjoy!
For abbreviation's sake,
AP = Angel's Pawn, TD = Thundering defense
Rt CC = Right Central Cannon, Rt E = Right Central Elephant.
Rt proper H = Right proper horse (H2+3), 3PA = 3rd Pawn Advancement
