The Sandwiched Horse Defense is a proven counter against the Central Cannon. Although it has been present in some of the ancient manuals, it only became accepted as an orthodox opening in the 20th century. GM Hu Ronghua is credited to have revived and breathed life to this opening in the 1960-70's..
This board is concerned with one of the most played variations for red : the pawn ranked chariot and 7th pawn advancement variation. Black defends against this variation in a number of ways.
I have based this board primarily on Master 阎文清 and Master 张强's work after briefly checking it against different manuals by different authors.
The moves give represent the generally "orthodox" moves that have been proven over time in many competitions. However, I do advise the reader to form his conclusions about the various formations as there is no sure-win opening variation in Xiangqi, and different formations may be treated the differently by different people.
I do not expect that anyone will be a master of this opening after going through the boards but at least , do not make the basic mistakes or go against the principles of this opening.
For abbreviation's sake,
cc7parr = central cannon with 7th pawn advancement and ranked chariot,
sah = sandwiched horse defense
