A Word about Xiangqi Publications in English

While learning Xiangqi can be done from viewing this site or watching videos on Youtube, nothing beats reading books or publications on the topic. Unfortunately, English books on Xiangqi are still relatively scarce, and perhaps that is why Xiangqi has not caught on in the West.
The following is a list of English books about Xiangqi by the author and also other contemporary material. Links have been added if they are present. If not, please google the titles.
Over the years, the author has translated many Xiangqi books into English and have proceeded to publish them as books to preserve them in English. Introduction to the various titles can be found on the menu item publications.

Becoming a Xiangqi Assassin Series

Becoming a Xiangqi Assassin Volumes 1 & 2 are two books that aims to help you with your calculative skills in Xiangqi.

There are one hundred puzzles in Volume 1 which have been divided into kills that are 2-5 moves and kills that are 6-9 moves long.
There area also many examples of how the experts do it.

Endgame Treatise Series

Back in the 1930-40s, there were three treatises that studied specific endgame combinations of the chariot-horse, cannon-pawn and horse-pawn combinations. These treatises were important in that they laid the foundations for modern-day endgame theory in Xiangqi.
Chen Lianyong (陈廉庸 chén lián yōng) wrote two of the treatises: The Cannon-Pawn Treatise and the Horse-Pawn Treatise, while Tian Yushu (田玉书 tián yù shū) wrote the Chariot-Horse treatise.

Elegant Pastime Manual 《适情雅趣》

To this very day, the Elegant Pastime Manual is still one of the must-read classics in Xiangqi. It was edited and published in 1570AD by Xu Zhi. It was a selection of puzzles from an earlier book, Dreams of Divine Positions, which only a tiny fraction still exists. There are 550 Xiangqi puzzles in the ancient manual, all demonstrating brilliant kills, and tactical combinations. There were also some simple advice and pointers to play the game.
The Elegant Pastime Manual is also vibrant regarding Chinese culture.

Undertstanding the Elephant Series

This series was created with the aim of introducing the basics of Xiangqi in detail so that the newcomer will have a firm foundation that will last a life-time. Work is still going on. Thus far, there are four volumes that have been written. Work is still under way for new instalments that discuss other aspects of Xiangqi.

Dreams of Divine Positions 《梦入神机》

Dreams manual cover for KindleBefore the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644 AD), books about Xiangqi had already existed. One of the earliest of these manuals was Dreams of Divine Positions.
It was said to have been a twelve-volume work. Unfortunately, only a fraction has made it through the sands of time. Luckily, some of it has been collected and survived in the Elegant Pastime Manual. The Dreams of Divine Positions that we have today consists of 144 Xiangqi puzzles or endgame compositions. The first few puzzles are straightforward and rudimentary, but the degree of difficulty would increase significantly towards the end.
The author has also taken great pains to study and identify the ancient passages from which the title was derived. It is a treasure trove of culture whereby the ancient Chinese have managed to combine the wisdom in the ancient texts into the puzzles.
